Topic: B.E10 Deeper in the Wilderness – Memorable Encounters with Special Children and their Parents

Synopsis: Following the publication of her first book, “Preschool in the Wilderness”, join Dr Denise as she reads excerpts from her second book, “Deeper in the Wilderness: Stories of Inclusion from Singapore’s Early Childhood Landscape”. In these excerpts, she will recall the children (and their families) who over a span of two decades, attended Wee Care for behaviour therapy and/or inclusion in its preschool programmes, but whom paradoxically she feels she learnt the most from.

Starting with Anne, mother of Michael, a highly verbal and intelligent boy with ASD and himself now a married father of a little girl; to mothers who fought with her over their children’s diagnoses or the “right” course of action to take, as well as students who bit and scratched her, climbed gates and cupboards to escape tasks or wrecked her office in bursts of temper tantrums, Dr Denise’s memories will surely strike a chord with teachers and therapists who work with and care for these exceptional children on a regular basis.

Through these stories, she hopes to demonstrate that the challenge of acceptance and inclusion cannot be overcome singlehandedly, but with love, patience and grit embedded in committed circles of relationship.
